Stonemills Roofing recently completed a Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) roofing installation on one of downtown Kingston’s historic heritage buildings.

Location: Downtown Kingston

Category: Flat Roof

Date: June 2023

This project required a careful balance of modern roofing technology and respect for architectural preservation, ensuring the building maintained its historic character while benefiting from a durable, energy-efficient roofing system.

TPO roofing is a single-ply membrane made from a blend of polypropylene and ethylene-propylene rubber, reinforced with a polyester scrim for strength and flexibility. It’s a popular choice for flat and low-slope roofs thanks to its reflective white surface, which helps reduce heat absorption and improve energy efficiency—an ideal solution for older buildings in urban settings.

Our process for this project included:

  1. Careful removal of the existing roofing materials to preserve the structure beneath.

  2. Priming and preparation of the roof deck to ensure a stable base.

  3. Installation of vapor barriers and insulation layers for improved moisture control and thermal performance.

  4. Application of the fully adhered TPO membrane, using flameless hot-air welding to create strong, watertight seams without risk of open flame damage.

Because heritage properties often have unique architectural challenges, our team worked closely with the client to ensure all materials and techniques met preservation standards while delivering a modern, high-performance roofing system.

This project showcases Stonemills Roofing’s expertise in combining traditional craftsmanship with advanced roofing technology, serving commercial, institutional, and heritage properties across Kingston and Eastern Ontario.
